The Story Of Swal'lech Construction From 1989 to Today

The Swal’lech Story

How it Began

Alan and Patt discovered Lopez Island in 1989 when looking for a place to build their retirement dream home. They found the perfect plot of land. “Can I have it?” Alan asked Patt immediately upon setting foot in the field with expansive views south and east. During construction of their dream home, Alan and Patt were married in a weekend wedding celebration and house raising with friends. After the house that “Alan and Patt built” was complete, they visited on weekends and holidays enjoying all that Lopez has to offer. Fast forward to 1999, no longer satisfied with just visiting Lopez Island, they moved here full-time. Alan worked as a carpenter and Patt worked at the Lopez Clinic. In 2005 they hung out their shingle and Swal’lech Construction was born!

Owning and operating a full-service general contracting company was, at first, their way to make a living and forge a life in their new community. It didn’t take long before they realized it was so much more. Not only were they paying the bills, but they were making new friends and helping them realize their dreams. Dreams of remodeled kitchens, new decks, or family dream homes. They soon realized that sharing their skills and love for building homes was also extending their family with each project. And that is what they love most about owning and operating Swal’lech Construction.

Let us share in your dreams by helping to make them come true and having you become part of our extended Lopez family!

Meet The Team

Alan Di Bona

Alan

Alan is Partner and our Leader and Supporter, as well as Sales Director. He renovated his first house, a 1920 Craftsman, in 1986 and put himself through graduate school working as a jack-of-all-trades handyman. In 1991 he built his home on Lopez with his wife, Patt, where they raised their two daughters, Ren and Kai, and now live with one energetic (though, endearing) Doodle named Zabu. Before forming Swal’lech, Alan worked on a number of new homes in the San Juan’s, including two for Ravenhill Construction. He also worked for the Bellingham construction firm, Wellman and Zuck, supervising the construction of the Lopez Children’s Center in Lopez Village. He loves being a part of our Lopez community. He enjoys planting his trees and is an aspiring chef in his down time.
